Beatmaking 101 and 102

Beatmaking 101: Mondays

  • Middle School: 4:30 - 5:40pm
  • High School: 5:45 - 6:55pm

Beatmaking 102: Tuesdays

  • Middle School: 4:30 - 5:40pm
  • High School: 5:45 - 6:55pm

Our beatmaking course is a six-week introduction to beat history, digital music production, and creative composition using Ableton Live 12. Students will learn how to create MIDI and audio loops, record live instruments, develop song structure, use effects, and complete an original piece of music.

Rather than approaching Ableton as a collection of technical features, Beat Lab focuses on creativity through simplicity. Students will learn a small number of production tools each week and immediately use those tools to create music. Beatmaking 102 adds more advanced techniques like automation, MIDI editing, sampling, or more sophisticated recording as well as deeper discussions about musical traditions.

Alternative Band: Rock Jam

Middle School: Wednesdays, 4:30-6pm

High School: Thursdays, 4:30-6pm

Rock Jam is a hands-on music enrichment experience where students discover what it means to be part of a band through playing, listening, experimenting, creating, and sharing music together.

Students explore guitar, bass, drums, keys, and vocals while developing foundational skills in rhythm, melody, harmony, song structure, ensemble playing, and creative expression. No previous musical experience is required. Students with prior experience can take on additional roles, leadership opportunities, and creative challenges.
